1. Why should someone donate a vehicle to Vehicles
For Change instead of another nonprofit?
In short you will receive the greatest possible car donation tax deduction.
For many of our car donations, they will be refurbished and provided to a
worthy family to gain or maintain employment!
If your car is in good condition and can be awarded to one of our worthy
families, you will receive the fair market value for your car donation tax deduction. The exception in the tax law states
that a donor can deduct the fair market value if the car is donated to a
nonprofit who, as part of its mission, sells that car to a low wage family
as significantly below market. Practically all other nonprofits in this
region will sell your car at auction without ever seeing the vehicle.

2. My car is not in very good condition. Can I still
donate my car?
All car donations are accepted, delivered to VFC and
reviewed by a "car professional". If the car is deemed to be in poor
condition it will be sold at auction. Unlike most other nonprofits, VFC will
place a minimum price on the car prior to sending it to auction. We will
also make minor repairs, if deemed necessary and clean the car to assure the
highest possible sale price. This is all done to create the greatest return
for VFC and the highest possible deduction for our donors. 100% of the
proceeds are used to repair other cars.

3. My car is newer and in great condition but it has
a major problem. (a bad motor or transmission, etc)?
The tax law also has an exception stating that if you donate a car that needs major repair, and the nonprofit makes that major repair prior to
selling the car, the donor can take the fair market value deduction. VFC
will make the major repair on a car of this type. The car will then be sold
on our retail lot, Freedom Wheels, where 100% of the proceeds support the
VFC program. The complete tax law can be found on the VFC website at http://vehiclesforchange.org/tax_regs.html.

4. Do I have any liability after I donate my car?
It is very important that when your car is picked up by our tow company that
you sign the title as the seller and print Vehicles For Change as the buyer.
This will help assure that no other individual or organization can receive
your car. At that point your car has officially been transferred to VFC. You
have no further liability after you have completed this phase of the car donation process. If you are a Maryland resident please make
sure you remove your tags and return them to the MVA prior to dropping your
insurance.

5. How many of the donated cars actually go to
low-wage families?
In essence there are 3 different types of cars that are donated to us.
1. Keepers - A car in good condition that can be repaired and put in very good condition for under $800 (our cost). This is a our car experts feel will provide at least 2 years 24,000 miles of reliable service for our recipients. 100% of these cars are provided to one of our worthy families. This is typically 1 in 3.8 of all donations.
2. Cars that do not meet our reliability standards. These cars are sold, usually at wholesale prices. 100% of the proceeds are used to prepare cars for families. These funds along with the funds from our retail lot, Freedom Wheels, generate 30% or our operating funds. VFC does place a bottom line price on the car so as to generate the greatest possible amount for us and the highest possible deduction for our donor.
3. Cars that are either "luxury" or need major repair and otherwise in great condition and newer models. These cars are repaired and sold on our retail lot, Freedom Wheels. Again, 100% of the proceeds are used to prepare cars for worthy families. As noted above this is part of our 30% of our operating funding. This is typically 1 in 10 of all car donations. This option provides VFC with a source of operating funds and provides our donor with the highest possible tax deduction.

6. Is there much paper work involved?
No, to donate your car you can complete the online donation
form or call us at (800) 835-3821. The call will take 10
minutes. You will need the VIN number and number of miles of the car.

7. How can I receive a car donation?
Recipients are identified through VFC partner sponsoring agencies.
Recipients must live in counties financially supporting the VFC program. You
can call (800) 835-3821 to find out if you live in one such
county. Also review the recipient requirements to see if you qualify for a car donation.

8. Why do you ask for a social security number?
The IRS now requires us to collect your Social Security Number for tax
reporting purposes. This information is kept confidential, however it is
required for us to process the car donation. You can still
donate your car and not provide your SS number. We have no way of knowing
how that will affect your ability to deduct the car donation.

9. Does VFC accept all cars and trucks?
Yes all cars are accepted. Please see the answer to question number one as
to how the cars are used.
10. Does VFC accept any other vehicle donations?
Yes, VFC accepts boats, RV’s and trailers. These are accepted based on the
overall condition of the vehicle. A VFC team member will typically review
the vehicle prior to acceptance.

11. From what region will VFC accept a car donation?
VFC will accept a car donation in most all sections of
Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. VFC will travel to most
other areas of the country depending on the quality of the car. The demand
for cars outweighs the supply so we will go to extremes to assist our worthy
families. That means have cars picked up most anywhere.

12. How else can I help? I do not have the ability to donate a car, but I would like to help.
Our friends can help Vehicles for Change even if they do not have a car donation. Vehicles for Change does accept cash donations. 100% of the cash donation will be used to market for, retrieve or repair a vehicle donation. You can also help by volunteering your time to assist in office functions, retrieve car donations, or to move cars to garages. Finally VFC has recently created a new partnership partnership with other nonprofits. They assist us in getting car donations and we provide them with a cash donation for each car.
