| 73% of VfC customers have obtained better jobs/promotions and have increased their income by an average of $4,558.00. Recipients feel better about themselves, the independence they have gained and what they can do for their children. They are feeling healthier and less stressed. They are attending religious services on a regular basis, caring for aging family members and spending more time with family and friends. Most importantly their car has helped strengthen the family structure. The children have more opportunities than ever. After school activities, sports and recreational programs are the most common. All customers stated they are now able to get their children to doctor's appointments and daycare. Cars do make a difference. Customers have the opportunity of obtaining financial independence and are taking advantage of it. Not only are they making a better life for themselves and their families, they are saving taxpayers millions of dollars. The average family of three cost the State $9,360.00 in Temporary Cash Assistance and Food Stamps each year (per Carroll County DSS). * Vehicles For Change will present 400 cars to families in 2004 saving the State and taxpayers approximately **2.7 million dollars. Sixty-one percent of families owning their cars for six months or longer were surveyed. Efforts to contact the others were not successful. * It is assumed that if a customer has obtained a "better job" with an average increase in pay of $4,558.00 State benefits will soon be eliminated. ** 400 (number of families getting cars) x .73(% getting better jobs and leaving welfare) x $9360 STUDY OF 84 CUSTOMERS HAVING CARS FOR OVER SIX MONTHS.
