State of Maryland Transportation Assistance Program

Get A Donated Car

The Maryland State Department of Human Resources (DHR) has partnered with Vehicles for Change to implement a Transportation Assistance Program (TAP), which will provide vehicles statewide to help the following maintain employment:

Current TCA recipients or former TCA recipient within the last 12 months,

Foster care youth ages 18 to 21 years old, or

Current TCA-connected non-custodial parents or non-custodial parents formerly connected to a TCA case within the last 12 months.

Contact your DSS case worker or a TAP coordinator through your local DSS office for more information.

Are you on the road to self-sufficiency but struggle with transportation? Are you ready to gain access to better employment opportunities and enjoy personal independence? Vehicles for Change may be able to help you get there!

We receive car donations from the public, our ASE certified master mechanics oversee making them “road ready,” and then we award them at affordable prices to eligible families in Maryland and Northern Virginia.

We have two programs that award vehicles. Additional qualifications can be found on these program pages.

To qualify for a vehicle, you must meet the following basic criteria:

  • You must be a resident of Maryland
  • You must be referred by one of the sponsoring agencies listed here
  • You must have a verifiable job offer or be working at least 30 hours a week
  • You must have a driver’s license in the state in which you reside
  • You must be insurable (no DWIs or DUIs)
  • You must not have any other vehicle in your household
  • You must be drug-free
  • You must be able to cover fees for taxes, tags, and title (approximately an additional $500)
  • If you are under the age of 25, you must have children
  • You must be able to afford the ongoing cost of car ownership (insurance, fuel, and repairs, as needed)
  • You may need to meet additional criteria required by your sponsoring agency.
