Inside VFC
April 2005

Vehicles For Change is a non-profit organization that repairs and provides donated vehicles to low-income families for employment purposes.

Virginia Expansion
VFC recently received confirmation from the Virginia Department of Social Services that it has been awarded a $365,000 contract to expand the program into 8 new counties in the state. In addition, new contracts were also awarded to expand the program in several regions where the program has operated for the past several years. The new regions include Lynchburg City, Amhurst, Bedford, Campbell, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Fredericksburg, King George and Stafford. VFC now has contracts to award 50 cars per month in Maryland and Virginia. It is a real vote of confidence by the State of Virginia to award VFC such a large contract.

Our VFC Top Five List of Donations
  • 2001 Grand Caravan
  • 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • 1999 GMC Silverado
  • 1995 BMW 740IL
  • 2001 Dodge Intrepid

VFC would like to again thank these and all our generous donors for making it possible for us to continue to assist low-income families by providing their much-needed transportation.

Effect of the New Tax Law In our last issue we informed our readers as to the new tax law that had been signed by President Bush. The new law has already had an effect on donations. Thanks to the panic that the law invoked, December saw record donations.

Unfortunately, since then donations have fallen by almost fifty percent. Most donors are aware only of the portion of the tax lax stating that a donor can only deduct the amount for which the charity sells the car.

Please note the exception in the law that allows for the full fair market value of a deduction if the donated car is used in the program. i.e. provided to a low-income family. Visit our website at www.vehiclesforchange.org for more information.

We want to remind our friends that a donation to VFC may still result in a deduction of the full fair market value. There are two possible scenarios where this is possible.

  • 1) The donated car is in good enough condition that we can award it to a recipient.

    OR

  • 2) The donated car is newer than a 1996 but needs significant repair.
In either one of these scenarios the donor may take the fair market value of the donation.

VFC would once again like to recognize two of the many wonderful garages that assist us in our daily efforts to keep VFC cars on the road. This quarter we recognize Stan Rollisons’ Automotive in Woodbridge, VA. Stan has been a partner with VFC for the past four years and does outstanding work. One of our longest standing partners, Stan’s a very versatile shop and we highly recommend them.
