DONATING a Car CREATES JOBS
The job climate in the Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Detroit areas is difficult to enter into without training and documented skills. Without previous work experience or certificates of training, unemployed individuals are unable to find jobs that meet their families’ needs. Vehicles for Change is committed to empowering low-income families in the area through its multi-faceted non-profit organization. Since 1999, Vehicles for Change has contributed to improving the lives of thousands of working individuals.
How Donating a Car Creates Jobs
While Vehicles for Change is best known for the affordable cars they offer to eligible families, its impact is far more reaching. Before it leaves the VFC lot, the vehicle must be refurbished if possible and detailed. Donating a car to Vehicles for Change not only provides a family with a much-needed vehicle; it helps maintain the organization’s most recent addition, the Center for Automotive Careers.
The partnership between Vehicles for Change and the Center for Automotive Careers is symbiotic and allows for the organization to reach even more low-income individuals in need of a fresh start and equal chance in the job market. Donating a vehicle helps provide families with tools they need for upward mobility.
Vehicles for Change Commits to Workers
Vehicles for Change is committed to helping low-income families improve their circumstances and reach their potential. The primary way the organization has worked toward this goal is by providing affordable cars for working families. Car ownership is linked to increased wages, promotions, and better health. Vehicles for Change uses generous car donations from the community to empower low-income families. Those generous donations allow Vehicles for Change to offer eligible families vehicle access for as low as $750.
While workers have always been central to Vehicles for Change’s participants, they recently added the Center for Automotive Careers to make a more direct impact on the job opportunities low-income individuals have in the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. areas. Donating a car to Vehicles for Change allows for the widest possible impact by improving the lives of both workers and low-income families.
Center for Automotive Careers
The Center for Automotive Careers is a new component of the non-profit organization, Vehicles for Change. The Center for Automotive Careers and Vehicles for Change have a mutually beneficial relationship. Focused on helping low-income and unskilled workers, the Center for Automotive Careers offers free training to individuals looking to work in the automotive industry. The Center for Automotive Careers also offers graduates from its training program a four-week paid internship where the skills learned in training can be further improved.
Currently, the Center for Automotive Careers only offers training in automotive detailing, but they will soon expand to include automotive technicians as well. The Center for Automotive Careers is an important part of the Vehicles for Change organization, along with Freedom Wheels, its used car lot. Donating a car to Vehicles for Change has the potential to have an impact on each aspect of the non-profit organization.
Training Program at the Center for Automotive Careers
The training program used by the Center for Automotive Careers follows a two-week schedule that includes teaching students about the car detailing business, the skills needed for detailing, and how to look for a job in automotive detailing. After successful completion of the comprehensive training program, students are given a four-week paid apprenticeship with Vehicles for Change.
During this time, they detail cars donated to Vehicles for Change for resale at its used car lot, Freedom Wheels, or sold at reduced rates to eligible families. After their four-week internship, students have the tools and skills they need to find employment detailing cars. Graduates of the Center for Automotive Careers find they are much more competitive in the job market, and many find jobs before their internship is complete.
Students Gain Valuable Skills
During the training program and subsequent internship, students from the Center for Automotive Careers gain valuable skills that will help them find employment elsewhere once the program is finished. Learning how to detail a car in the one-on-one training environment means these students are prepared to succeed in the field of automotive detailing. Additionally, the Center for Automotive Careers offers real-world advice on finding employment after the program, which gives students a leg up in today’s highly competitive job market.
In addition to the technical skills provided by the trainers at the Center for Automotive Careers, life skills are also taught. Since many of the students participating in the program have been recently released from prison, it is important for them to have strong mentorship that helps them transition back into the community. Vehicles for Change is committed to helping low-income workers succeed, and important skills beyond technical detailing are a big part of this commitment. Donating a car to Vehicles for Change helps them achieve these goals.
CAC Offers Resume Booster
The training program at the Center for Automotive Careers is competitive and provides students with important skills to place on their resume. In addition, working at the Center for Automotive Careers for four weeks after graduating from the training program means individuals have job experience to add to their resume.
Having a resume that stands out in today’s job market is difficult, but Vehicles for Change’s Center for Automotive Careers prepares students and gives them the resume they need to obtain the employment they deserve.
Center for Automotive Careers: Success Stories
By donating a car to Vehicles for Change, you are also providing students at the Center for Automotive Careers the opportunity to learn the skills needed to work in automotive detailing. Hundreds of students have graduated from the program and have gone on to work at a number of Baltimore area detailing shops. Vehicles for Change is a proud part of improving low-income individuals’ lives through providing skills and work experience in automotive detailing.
CAC Keeps Costs Low
The Center for Automotive Careers helps keep costs low for refurbished and resold vehicles because paid interns have the chance to improve their detailing skills on donated cars for Vehicles for Change. Some cars the Center for Automotive Careers details are luxury cars that will be resold at Freedom Wheels, the used car lot that is a part of Vehicles for Change.
Other vehicles will be detailed for resale to low-income families eligible for the program. Regardless of where the donated vehicle is headed, interns at the Center for Automotive Careers work hard to make sure it is in the best condition possible before resale.
Donating a Car Helps Families
Donating a car to Vehicles for Change helps low-income families maintain steady employment by providing reliable and affordable transportation opportunities. Additionally, the organization houses the Center for Automotive Careers, which improves job prospects for people recently released from jail or those who do not possess the skills necessary for sustainable employment. Your contribution helps the lives of many low-income families through both employment opportunities with the organization and increased independence through affordable car ownership.
