From Struggle to Stability: Yusef’s Story

Before Yusef was awarded his car through Vehicles for Change, life was, in his words, “very, very rough.” The simplest tasks like getting to work, taking his children to school, or attending a doctor’s appointment became daily battles.

“It was hard, a lot of pressure,” Yusef shared. “The kids had to walk to school, and just getting to work was rough. I had to get to the bus stop and sometimes had to wait hours. Everything was stressful.” 

For Yusef, public transportation was inconvenient and a barrier to stability. Some days, making it to work was impossible, costing him income and job security. “There were times when I couldn’t make it to work because the only option I had was the bus.” 

His frustration wasn’t just about missing opportunities. He was frustrated about what he was forced to endure in the process. “Riding a bike in storms, in the rain, in the cold…it was freezing. I had to bring my kids out there with me. It was hard.” 

The Moment Everything Changed

Yusef first heard about Vehicles for Change through DHS Social Services in Salisbury. At the time, he had no idea what was ahead. When he learned he had been selected to receive a vehicle, he could hardly believe it. “I was overwhelmed,” he said. “It was a dream come true.”

Soon after, the moment he received the keys became unforgettable. “It was like so many of my problems and stress just went away,” he shared. “I felt so much at ease.”

From that point on, owning a car didn’t just change Yusef’s daily routine—it transformed his entire outlook on life. No longer did he have to wait for buses or rely on others for rides. Instead, that constant weight was finally lifted.

Even more importantly, the car gave him the freedom to care for his children in the way he always hoped to. “They were with me when I went to get the car,” Yusef said. “They were happy and excited. It’s a great blessing for all of us.”

Reliable Transportation Gives Hope and Opportunity

With reliable transportation in place, Yusef’s job prospects expanded almost overnight. As a result, he was able to pick up additional shifts at work and bring in extra income for his household. At the same time, everyday tasks—like grocery shopping and medical appointments—became far easier to manage.

However, the real magic showed up in the moments he could now share with his children. When asked about his favorite adventure in the new car, Yusef smiled. “I took the kids out of town and just went for a ride,” he said. “Just a ride.”
