From Struggle to Stability – Yusef’s Story

Before Yusef Walker, Sr. was awarded his car through Vehicles for Change, life was, in his words, “very, very rough.” The simplest tasks—getting to work, taking his children to school, or even attending a doctor’s appointment—became daily battles against time, weather, and unreliable public transportation. 

“It was hard, a lot of pressure,” Yusef shared. “The kids had to walk to school, and just getting to work was rough—having to get to the bus stop and all that. Everything was stressful.” 

For Yusef, public transportation was not just inconvenient—it was a barrier to stability. Some days, making it to work was impossible, costing him income and job security. “There were times when I couldn’t make it to work because the only option I had was the bus.” 

His frustration wasn’t just about missing opportunities—it was about what he was forced to endure in the process. “Riding a bike in storms, in the rain, in the cold—it was freezing. And I had to bring my kids out there with me. It was hard.” 

 

The Moment Everything Changed 

Yusef first heard about Vehicles for Change through DHS Social Services in Salisbury. When he learned he had been selected to be awarded a vehicle, he couldn’t believe it. “I was overwhelmed,” he said. “It was a dream come true.” 

The moment he received the keys was unforgettable. “It was like, all my problems—well, not all my problems—and all that stress just went away. I felt so much at ease.” 

Owning a car didn’t just change Yusef’s daily routine—it transformed his entire outlook on life. The weight of waiting for buses or relying on others for rides was lifted.  

More importantly, it gave him the freedom to care for his children the way he always wanted to. “They were with me when I went to go get the car. They were happy, they were excited. They still are. It’s a great blessing for all of us.” 

With reliable transportation, Yusef’s job prospects expanded overnight. He was able to pick up additional shifts at work and add extra income to his household. Meanwhile, everyday tasks like grocery shopping or getting to appointments have become easier. 

The real magic was in the moments he could now share with his children. When asked about his favorite adventure in his new car, Yusef smiled. “I took the kids out of town and just went for a ride. Just a ride.”
