Partnering for Change – Travis’ Story
March 14, 2025This week, for Vehicles for Change’s 25 Cars, 25 Stories, the spotlight is on an incredible partner, Travis Martz, General Counsel for the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association (MADA). Travis’s passion for the automobile industry and his commitment to making a difference in the community have made him a long-standing supporter of Vehicles for Change.
Travis’s journey with Vehicles for Change began over 15 years ago. It was a chance encounter that changed everything. “I first learned about VFC around 15 years ago, and I was so impressed with the mission that I immediately became a board member,” he recalls. From that moment, Travis was not only invested in the organization but also eager to use his expertise and connections to help further its impact.
For Travis, the VFC mission is deeply personal. As a representative of Maryland’s auto dealer industry, he’s seen firsthand how vital the work of VFC is in shaping the future of the auto tech workforce. “Qualified auto technicians are very hard to find, and Vehicles for Change is helping to build the future of the auto tech business in Maryland,” he shares. By offering technical training and career opportunities, VFC plays a key role in bridging a critical gap in the industry, while also providing life-changing opportunities for individuals seeking stable, well-compensated careers.
Over the years, Travis has had the privilege of witnessing the powerful impact of the organization’s work. One experience that stands out to him is attending the vehicle awards hosted by the organization. “I’ve attended a half dozen car awards, and the emotion of the event is powerful,” Travis says. “You can’t not be a supporter after attending a vehicle award.”
The impact of Vehicles for Change extends beyond just awarding vehicles. Travis believes that the Full Circle Automotive Training Programs equip individuals with skills that are not only in demand but also future proof. “Vehicles for Change trains individuals for professions that are well-compensated and will never be taken away by AI. These technicians will have a skill set for life,” he explains. This long-term career sustainability is something that sets the organization apart, making it an investment in both the individual and the community.
For Travis, the most rewarding aspect of being involved is seeing the tangible change in people’s lives. “Seeing the lives of vehicle awardees and technicians get life-altering experiences is the most rewarding part,” he says. “Whether it’s a parent receiving a car to ease their commute or a technician rising through the ranks in a dealership service department, the personal growth and new opportunities created through these programs are powerful.”
Looking ahead, Travis hopes to see Vehicles for Change continue to expand its training program across Maryland, furthering its impact on the auto industry and local communities. “I’d like to see them continue to build their training program in Maryland, and I plan to help them succeed by forging strong relationships with Maryland dealers,” he shares. His continued involvement with Vehicles for Change is a testament to his belief in the organization’s mission and his dedication to its success.
And as for his first car? “An Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais,” Travis recalls. “I drove it to the local baseball card store.”
Travis Martz and the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association partnership with Vehicles for Change is just one example of how the organization’s work is supported by passionate individuals who believe in change and second chances. Through his efforts, Travis is helping pave the way for a brighter future for both the auto industry and the communities that benefit from Vehicles for Change’s programs.
