Before receiving a car award from Vehicles for Change, Brenda J. faced daily challenges just getting where she needed to go. “I relied on public transportation and ride-sharing services,” she recalled. “It was a constant struggle, and I often felt trapped in a cycle of financial strain.”

As an Army veteran and grandmother of two, Brenda was no stranger to perseverance. Yet, without reliable transportation, even basic responsibilities, getting to work, caring for her family, planning for the future—felt like uphill battles.

That all changed in November 2023, when Brenda was awarded a vehicle through the Vehicles for Change Car Award program. She received her car at a special Veterans Day event hosted by Vehicles for Change and Heritage MileOne Autogroup, where 10 proud veterans were honored with vehicles in gratitude for their service.

Brenda was not only awarded a car—she was also chosen to share her story with guests and local media.

“I stand before you today, deeply moved and incredibly humbled,” she said during her speech. “You see, a vehicle is not just a machine; it’s a lifeline. It’s the key to independence, the freedom to move, and the chance to provide better for my family.”

With her new car, Brenda is dreaming bigger than ever. She’s pursuing a nursing career and most importantly, she can now create lasting memories with her grandchildren. “Their smiles are worth more than anything in the world, and thanks to your generosity, I can see those smiles more often.”

What once felt like survival mode has shifted into forward momentum. No longer spending hours commuting or making difficult sacrifices just to get by, Brenda’s days are now filled with purpose, and her nights with hope. The simple gift of transportation has become the foundation for a future she can build on.
