How Are Cars Awarded?

Recipients are referred to us through a sponsoring agency. Most of our recipients are single mothers, but some of the programs we work with are designed to work with men or displaced fathers. To qualify for a car through Vehicles For Change, individuals must:

  • Have a job or a job offer
  • Be insurable. No DWIs or DUIs
  • Be drug free
  • Be able to pay for insurance and fees for taxes, tags and titles

When VFC receives a referral from one of our sponsoring agency, the application is reviewed by Teresa McFadden, our Awards Coordinator. If accepted, Teresa starts the process of matching the recipient family with one of our available vehicles. Afterwards, the family comes in to the Vehicles For Change office to attend a car-owner orientation session and pick up their car. The entire process takes about a month, from start to finish. Cars are awarded to families residing in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C.
