VFC Recipient Victoria Smothers: “I love my ‘baby girl'”
July 20, 2014wasn’t smiling because she was about to receive a car from Vehicles for Change – she received a car from VFC in January – she was grinning because she couldn’t wait to talk about how much she loved her car.“I love my ‘Baby Girl,’” said Smothers, beaming from ear to ear, “I take care of her and she takes care of me.”
At the beginning of 2012, Smothers had received a job offer from the Maryland Transit Authority to be a bus driver. It was an offer that required her to own a vehicle, so Metropolitan Baltimore Quadel (MBQ), referred Smothers to VFC. Within a few weeks, she drove away with a 1997 Honda Accord.
Not only did the vehicle allow Smothers to secure a new job, but it also assisted her in everyday tasks such as grocery shopping and cleaning clothes at the laundry mat. It also made it easier for Smothers to attend church services each week.
“I’m a church girl!” she said, laughing. “This is a great program. I would recommend anyone to this program. I am so grateful. It can work if you want it to work. As soon as I got the car, I knew I was going to try to pay it off early, and I did.”
