WMZQ Fall Fest Car Giveaway

After a month-long contest, Vehicles for Change awarded a 2003 Chevy Impala to a Virginia family at WMZQ’s Fall Fest on Saturday, September 8th.

Throughout the month of August, WMZQ listeners nominated families that they knew were in great need of a vehicle. WMZQ and VFC staff then reviewed the nominees and narrowed the list down to two finalists. After a week of public voting, Chantilly resident Christina Darr was named the winner.

Darr, a single mother of two young boys, had been temporarily borrowing her mother’s car to travel to her job as a security officer. A week before Fall Fest, Darr was offered a new job working security at George Mason University – but the position was contingent on Darr having her own vehicle.

Darr also greatly needed her own vehicle to care for her children – her seven-year-old son is autistic and attends a special school in Fairfax County. Without a vehicle, Darr had no way of taking her sons to separate schools each day.

At Fall Fest, WMZQ’s Michael J. and VFC Board Member Ken Umansky awarded Darr the blue Chevy Impala on the side stage, in front of a crowd of approximately 20,000 people. Despite having the car keys in her hand, Darr was in shock that the vehicle belonged to her.

After the concert Darr’s mother Pat said: “It is still so unreal to me that my daughter was able to drive a car away last night.  It is such a blessing. We are still in disbelief!”
