Young Mother Starts New Year on the Right Path

In December 2015, Vehicles for Change decided to spread some holiday cheer by offering Lyft rides home to applicants waiting for a car donation. Brittany Lunkin, one of the selected Lyft riders, explained how life without a car was a challenge. “I have to leave my house very early in the morning and walk to the train station in the dark in order to make it to work on time. I get off in the afternoon, wait for the train and then walk 20 minutes from the train station to pick up my son. After that, we walk home together,” Lunkin said.

In January 2016, Lunkin received a late holiday gift; her name was removed from the car donation waiting list and she was awarded a car of her own. She would no longer endure her lengthy daily commute, thanks to Vehicles for Change.

As a mother of two, Lunkin’s life had many limitations without personal transportation. “It was tough keeping my children from participating in extracurricular activities, getting to the grocery store and commuting to work. Now that I have a car I will be able to spend more time with family, I will have access to better groceries and my family will be able to live a healthier lifestyle,” she said. Lunkin is excited to seek employment with higher pay and attend her children’s school functions. “My daughter is in the honors society. Now we can attend her monthly meetings and she can participate in all of the activities with her group.”

A car donation has given Lunkin and her children the freedom they need to access more opportunities.
